Project Description
PULVERMÄCHER, Stetten Riesling Großes Gewächs
The Stettener Pulvermächer is among the most picturesque and prized sites in the region. The first verified reference to this richly historical vineyard came in 1650. ‘Pulvermächer’ (powder maker) is an antiquated term for an explosives engineer, and the name derives from the nearby quarry where explosives work was common.
Rugged sandstone soils with significant veins of iron form the core of this west-facing vineyard situated near the Y-burg. The heart of the site is located in the old stone terraces directly beneath the castle and which efficiently capture and store the heat of the day.
Fruit for the Großes Gewächs is carefully hand harvested into small containers and then spontaneously fermented in large wooden barrels.
The Pulvermächer Riesling has a distinctive set of aromas. There is a notable mineral cast to its acidity, helping convey a range of aromatic herbs reminiscent of anise and fennel. The wine exudes a brilliant elegance and finesse laced with subtle sophistication.
